Revd Julia Powley

Hello! I was born and have lived most of my life in Cumbria. I grew up in Cockermouth before going to St Andrews University to study Modern and Medieval History. It was in my second year at St Andrews that I became a Christian, an evening which has shaped my life ever since. After university, I returned to Cumbria and studied to become a chartered accountant. Eventually I became a partner in a local firm called Dodd and Co, where I was responsible for the largest and smallest clients in the firm.

Alongside this, I worshipped at St James Church in Carlisle, leading the music group and running house groups. At the end of 1997, I retired from accountancy to become a full time lay minister at St James, which I did for some ten years until 2007, when I went to Ridley Hall to train for ordination. After ten years ministering to two parishes on the west coast of Cumbria, I retired to Penrith in late 2022. I am deputy healing adviser for the diocese and involved in clergy wellbeing. I am still very involved in discernment at both Diocesan and national level as well as taking an active role in my local parish church. I share my home with my cat, Jazz, or perhaps it’s the other way round! I love music and crafts as well as reading and walking (but not up mountains!)

I have had various experiences of the power of the Holy Spirit, including through Anglican Renewal Ministries many years ago. I have experienced healing at physical and emotional levels. I long to see parishes renewed in the power of the Holy Spirit and to encourage church leaders as they seek to negotiate all of the calls on their time and energy.
