Lunchtime Conversations - Blessings and Blind Spots

Blessings and Blind Spots

What do different traditions and streams within the life of the Church of England believe about the Holy Spirit?

What might this mean for the renewal of the church?

Join ReSource Director Christopher Landau for a series of live conversations on Zoom, on Wednesday lunchtimes in January and March, exploring these questions with a series of interviewees from across the breadth of the CofE.

Each session will begin with around thirty minutes of conversation between Christopher and his guest, followed by questions and input from those attending. The final ten minutes or so will be a time of prayer, using the ‘Prayer During the Day’ framework. Feel free to bring your lunch!

The Conversations will also be available afterwards on the Resourcing Renewal Youtube page.

Book your tickets at the bottom of this page.

Questions we will be exploring with interviewees include:

  • What does the work of the Holy Spirit mean in the context of your tradition?

  • Where do you think the role of the Spirit gets most misunderstood in the life of the church?

  • Do you detect a nervousness about the apparent unpredictability of the Spirit?

  • How does the work of the Spirit relate to Anglican liturgy?

  • How comfortable are you with spontaneity in worship?

  • How do you understand the significance of the fruit of the Spirit and spiritual gifts in the Christian life?

  • How conscious are you of people having had negative experiences in overtly charismatic contexts?

7th January: The Revd Canon Dr Michael Leyden.

Michael is Dean of Emmanuel Theological College, which offers a wide variety of ministerial training across the north-west of England. Having served in a variety of contexts, Michael describes himself as a ‘sacramental charismatic’.

14th January: The Revd Marcus Walker.

Marcus is chair, and one of the founders, of the ‘Save the Parish’ movement. At St Bartholomew the Great in London he has overseen remarkable growth in a church that embraces history, tradition and a liturgical life rooted in the BCP.

21st January: The Revd Simon Ponsonby.

Simon is Pastor of Theology at St Aldates Oxford, and author of many acclaimed books on Christian discipleship, including More: How You Can Have More of the Spirit When You Already Have Everything in Christ

January 28th: Dr Ros Clarke.

Ros is Associate Director of Church Society and oversees its online content. She has a PhD on canonical interpretations of the Song of Songs, holds to complementarian theology, and is a member of General Synod.

March 4th: Bishop Leah Vasey Saunders.

Leah was appointed Bishop of Doncaster in 2025, having previously been Vicar of Lancaster. She remains Chair of On Fire Mission, which promotes charismatic and Catholic renewal in the Church of England.

March 11th: Bishop Mark Tanner.

Mark is Bishop of Chester. As Patron of ReSource, he says it ‘exists to serve and seek renewal in the Spirit in every season without recourse to easy triumphalism or simplistic answers’. He is the author of The Introvert Charismatic.

March 18th: Bishop Paul Thomas.

Paul is Bishop of Oswestry, and a Forward in Faith Executive Committee member. As bishop he extends pastoral and sacramental care to 110 traditional catholic churches across the Canterbury province.

[*The conversation with Paul Thomas will be pre-recorded, and the live discussion following will reflect on his contribution and the series as a whole.]
